A man by the name of Sali Mahomet started his ice cream business in Christchurch in 1903 He would make his ice cream from his home in St Albans, and then he would cart it into town on his cart to sell at Cathedral Square. ‘Ice Cream Charlie’ became a Christchurch institution, and he continued to sell ice cream in the Square until 1942, when, at age 76, a stroke left Sali unable to continue.
